jennaria: The entry-way to Bag End (home)
Um. Still not dead!

I wrote Witch Hunter Robin fic for a Yuletide pinch-hit - a somewhat angsty Amon character study, because canon is mostly from Robin's POV and doesn't bother to explain why Amon does much of anything. Also, fun re-watching something I hadn't watched in, mmm, at least fifteen years!

Speaking of things I hadn't watched/read in forever, my current shiny thing is Batman. Isn't it fun coming back to an old fandom? For values of 'fun' that sometimes mean 'wow, did I miss that subtext liek whoa.' Also includes minor spoilers for HUSH. )

Have picked back up with my Nibble Resolution, which is to do at least five stitches of counted cross stitch and one sentence of writing per day. It isn't a lot, but it's more than zero, which is what I was doing before. Yay me.

Now to go try to catch up with my reading page. Eeep.

*Saw MOANA this past weekend. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Soundtrack has been intermittently stuck in my head every since, but at least the songs have been taking turns.

*Snagged something off the Yuletide pinch-hitter's list (again). Got it written in two days! ...just in time for AO3 to crash. Ah, well, that gives me time to get the story looked over and polished, so it's not just HERE IS A THING.

Not belated this time!

THINGS THAT ARE NOT THE SAME AS THIS TIME LAST YEAR:
- New apartment
- New job
- New state, new region, all the news
- New driver's license (brand new - okay, not so brand new any more)
- okay so technically my niece and nephew were around this time last year but now I've met them, that totally counts for new
- some fandoms
- some friends
- 51% of a new language (Duolingo is my friend)

THINGS THAT HAVE NOT CHANGED
- wife (still awesome)
- cats (still fluffy or fuzzy depending)
- car (still green)
- other friends (hello again!)

Also Yuletide has been revealed, and I can now say in public that I wrote Thicker Than Water, Sleepy Hollow TV series, which I picked up as a pinch hit because the requester wanted Jenny and Abby and something about sisterhood, and I thought HELL YES. And then I went and researched European mythology (but not too intensively, because this is Sleepy Hollow we're talking about), and threw in Ichabod Crane being Ichabod Crane-y, and wrote what is totally an id-story for me, because sisterhood is important and sometimes complicated, even when you're not dealing with demons and the apocalypse coming. It...may or may not be readable without knowing canon? The wife was my beta-reader, and she knows canon as well as I do, so no help there. Edit: I now have testimony that it is, in fact, readable and enjoyable without knowing canon! So hooray.

*HOORAY NEW NIBLINGS. By which I mean, of course, that my sister is the proud mother of twins, and I am a proud auntie who is looking forward to going out and meeting said twins in a few months, after the rush of parental units has died down. (My parents are both YAY WE ARE GRANDPARENTS, which I should not find as amusing as I do. But my mother in particular has been so very very careful about 'It's okay if you don't want kids!' I don't. But I am still super-happy about the niblings.)

*Did you know that there was a Santa Fun Run in Boston, first Saturday in December? And by 'Fun Run' I mean 'dear lord people it is right around freezing why are you all in speedos or bikinis THE HAT ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH.' I mean, I am as shallow as the next person, so I appreciated the view! But they still looked cold. (Clearly I really am getting old. :wince:)

*I had the bright idea to do counted cross stitch for my Christmas presents this year. It's a good thing I have a wife, is what I'm saying, because she's the one who points out that maybe I should pick the small easy things, no really Thia, small is good. Which means I have four done, two half-done, and two to go (and of those two not even started, I'm not going to see those people until January some time, so there's a reason for the delay).

*Today is supposed to be writing day. Uh. Let's just say it's a good thing I didn't sign up for Yuletide this year, because I am so not getting stuff written. ...well, maybe.

Next up: re-reading my Yuletide canon so I can, y'know, write Yuletide. Whee.

Dear Yuletide writer,

Hi! And Thank you! Which is a predictable opening, but still true.

Whatever you write, thank you again, and I look forward to reading it!

The original plan for my Christmas was for self and [livejournal.com profile] faye_noire to head out West and spend it with my sister and BIL. Sadly, Things happened, and thus there was no journeying.

As it happens? I am totally okay with that.

On Monday, we played with our Christmas present from said sister (LEGO LORD OF THE RINGS, wherein Gimli, Legolas and Sam trade off being awesome, and poor Frodo less so), then headed out for a candlelight Christmas Eve service. Afterwards, we drove around with the radio playing jazz versions of Christmas carols, and admired the Christmas lights and Christmas reindeer and, in one yard, Christmas T-Rexes. (How did I not know these existed? :hearts:)

Today, we unwrapped presents (I have owl slippers!), and played more LEGO LORD OF THE RINGS ("No, seriously, Frodo, put your damn elven cloak on already, I've told you five times!"), then went to see LES MISERABLES and RISE OF THE GUARDIANS. Cut for spoilers? Is that even a thing for a movie based on a musical that's been out for decades now? )

Tomorrow, the plan is that we're going to have some friends come over to play board games and card games and who knows, maybe even LEGO LORD OF THE RINGS, and then eat ham and mashed potatoes and pecan pie. If I have time, I'll try to work my way farther through the Yuletide archive: I got a gloriously fluffy MAMMA MIA! story for my story about Harry (over here), and my recipient really liked the story I wrote, so the key bits are already in place. :-) In the meantime, this has been one of the best Christmases ever.

From a discussion about the difficulties of Yuletide:

Me: That's why I always try to make both my Yuletide request and my Yuletide letter all, 'hi, I'd like fluffity fluff fluff fluff.'

Tanya: Fluff. Fluff fluff fluffity fluff FLUFF.

Tanya's cat, whose name happens to be Fluff, from by her ankle: Mow?

Tanya: ...not you, baby. Although it's nice that you come when called.

Of course, Fluff then stalked off, unimpressed by the humans. But then, she is a cat.

Yesterday: got Yuletide assignment. I get to choose between Older Shiny Fandom and Brand New Shiny Fandom to write!

Today: learning Christmas music with my handbell choir, then home for housewarming/engagement party.

The Christmas whirl Has Begun. This should be interesting. Especially because the fiancee is totally a Christmas person.

First squee: the Yuletide story I got. Tickets, Please is a BACCANO! fanfic that is exactly the story I was hoping for when I asked for something Claire-centric. The author took my request for Claire/Chane, and Claire being 'bloody and awesome - oh, wait, that's all the time,' and ran with it. :hearts:

Second squee: the Yuletide story I wrote. The recipient liked it! So do other people! Yay!

Tomorrow, I'll be heading out early to try to persuade a bus to let me on in Waterbury, so I can get back to Boston before dark. If I succeed, I'll still wind up kicking around Hartford for an hour and a half. But in the meantime, I had good food and a quiet Christmas and good stories and people like my writing.

Dear Yuletide writer,

Hi! And thank you in advance!

Overarching comments: I am a hardcore romantic. Not in the sense that I think love solves all problems, because it doesn't, but in the sense that I believe that happy endings are possible. I prefer them to be earned, but I do love my happy endings. Probably my most infallible plot-kink is trust (and contrariwise, my biggest plot-squick is partner betrayal).

Dear Yuletide Santa,

Hi! And pre-emptively, thank you! Yuletide is always fun in a 'hooray, someone else loves one of my tiny little fandoms!' sort of way, so yay for you being willing to write one of my requests!

I prefer them to be earned, but I do love my happy endings. Which you probably guessed from my requests, given that the only one that's for a canon with a downer ending is asking for fix-it fic. :wry grin:
