...because last night they were pushing the RIVALRY OF THE RUSSIANS so hard on NBC, and I just did not care. Cut for Thia being cynical/catty. )

But! Rather than stay up until all hours to watch bullshit rivalry that I do not care about, Wife and I sat and watched the earlier skaters. Sometimes, this was a little painful - one skater fell, like, twice trying for her jump, and was So Visibly Relieved when she finally landed one - but sometimes it was, like, here is the only skater from Country You Never Realized Did Figure Skating! Mostly, it was just the people who don't get shown during prime-time: the people who aren't a US skater and not part of The Storyline. It's the people who are there for the love of it, who are trying for nothing more than saying they skated at the Olympics, and maybe a season's best. It's what I love about the Olympics, more than The Storyline.

* We had a brief period where we could pause an evening's viewing of Olympics, then go back! And watch the rest of the evening! But then apparently Hulu and/or NBC realized what we were doing, and now all we get are single programs here and there. Boo! Boo I say!

In which Thia is as catty as the NBC commentators. Wait, no, ain't nobody can be as catty as them. Also I'm bitter at NBC more than I'm bitter at the skaters. )

Wife wound up temporarily upgrading Hulu so we could watch just the men's figure skating short program, as opposed to Events We Just Don't Care About on regular NBC. Thoughts:

Cut for...I don't know, spoilers maybe? )

On the one hand, I am HERE FOR FIGURE SKATING. Yes, even the team event. On the other hand, Wife gently dragged me away from the TV set to continue working on our Classic Batcave Lego set, because Japan decided that eh, having gotten into the final set was good enough, and sent out Mr. 'no really, he did great in Juniors,' and I may perhaps have been screaming at the TV. (I admit nothing.)

On the third hand, I...kind of have a history of getting over-invested in the Olympics? It was the only sports event we regularly watched when I was a kid. I mean, I acknowledge NBC is totally manipulating me to keep me tuning it, but still. They're like SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATING and I'm like, "Don't care," and they're like, "But here is Maame Biney who is joy in human form at being in the Olympics and also really good at short track speed skating," and I'm like, "GO MAAME GO MAAME HOLD OFF THAT - YES YOU MADE IT INTO THE FINALS, YOU AMAZING PERSON YOU." ...and then I go back to not caring about short track speed skating.

(And by 'Olympics,' I mean 'Team Figure Skating competition, day one, men's short program,' because I need my sleep dammit.)

So, two things. Three things? Three things.

1) Lord above, was the ice cursed or something? I haven't seen that many falls in ages. Dear skaters: pls to emulate Yuuri at the end of the series, not the beginning.

2) I am bitter at NBC for choosing to give us a 'here's our usual saccharine background thingy on American Skater' rather than show us the Israeli skater. Especially as Alexei Bychenko danced the hora on ice, which I would have loved to see, and landed in second place after the short, as opposed to aforementioned American skater Nathan Chen, who flubbed his infallible quads and landed in fourth. Pbbth, NBC. Pbbbth.

3) Props to Shoma Uno of Japan for, well, not falling on his ass like every single other male skater, jeezum. Also skating a really good program! But wow did he not have much competition last night.
