I think this tie means I am obligated to provide kitten eyes. So!
A gray tabby lying twisted on her back, legs out so her tummy is showing
(I mean, this is admittedly more kitty tummy than kitten eyes, but I had to work with what I could get.)

Behold, Lady Penelope. (Yes, I am aware I missed International Cat Day. But really, isn't every day on the internet Cat Day?)

As part of our continuing efforts to Explore And Make Friends, Wife and I went to an art museum the other day, which is having a special exhibition of a set of medieval tapestries. We got an SCAdian-led tour of the exhibition, which included not only historical information about the battle portrayed in the tapestries, the people involved, and how the tapestries were made, but also cheerful snark about how if you weren't a famous nobleman, your face looked like pudding; how nobody knows who this one guy is or why he's pointing at the horse next to him ("Maybe he's saying, My horse now?"); how another guy doesn't technically have America's Ass, but only because this is long before America (and whoever drew/wove that booty must've really enjoyed their work); and our tour guide's favorite bit, a fully armored knight lying flat on his back in the middle of the battlefield, all like, "Guys? A little help here? I'm kinda stuck! ...okay, fine, playing dead it is."

So among the great joys of working from home (she says dryly) are cats! Specifically, the habit that both Yuri and Pallas have of sleeping underneath our chairs. Which roll. Which means that both Wife and I have learned to be Absolutely Still, and if we intend to roll back, we have to do an Awareness Check - where are the cats?

Sometimes they're safely and obviously not underfoot! Sometimes they're not even in the room! And sometimes - well -
A three-entrance cat tunnel on a carpeted floor: a small bit of cat pokes out of one entrance.

(Of course, I take a photo, and Pallas promptly peeks out to check out her paparazzi.)

Wife finally decided to get a new cat.

Wife wanted a kitten.

Wife was chosen by kitten.

Here is sample photo of kitten. Or, if you want a photo of kitten actually staying still, here. (Seriously, how do people get all those photos of kittens in a row staying cutely still? Either they have much more cooperative kittens than we do, or much faster cameras.)

His name is Yuri. He is adorable! And purrs as soon as you pick him up!

He is also exhausting. Partially because Pallas is Miss Not Trusting This Small Fuzzy Interloper 2020 (so we're Slowly Introducing them, and he's staying shut in a particular room most of the time), and partially because he has no sense of I Have Been Squirted With A Water Gun Every Time I've Been Caught On The Table, Gee, Maybe I Shouldn't Go On The Table (At Least While The Moms Can See), and partially because he is a kitten! and wants to play! all the damn time! Toes are for eating!

Wife has informed me that if she ever again gets the idea into her head that she wants a kitten/puppy, I am to remind her of this time and tell her NO NO NO NOT AGAIN.

EDIT: changed the links so the photos should be viewable, whoops, sorry, my bad

The quote is from a very very abridged summary of reactions to The Untamed, which is a series I am experiencing strictly second-hand. It looks super pretty! And the sort of thing that me from ten-fifteen years ago would have eaten up with a spoon and written All The Fix-It Fic for! But at the moment, I am Not Up For New Stories. Like, at all.

Part of it is just...2020. And all the multitude of minor stressors that have become major stressors (whee! anxiety for everyone!).

Part of it is that a couple weeks ago, we went from a two-cat household to a one-cat household. I won't talk about it, (a) because this isn't behind a cut and I try not to be That Asshole, and (b) because Wife is sorta back on her emotional feet (her cat, so she was hit harder), and I thought I was doing okay! until therapy last night, which ripped off the band-aid and now I'm crying at the drop of a hat. Any hat. Anywhere. Hats are littering the floor, apparently.

I feel like there should be a third part, but I can't think of one. Just, no new stories for me.

...Netflix better not take down The Old Guard before my brain stops being stupid, though.

Ways to Pallais's heart:

* One of those fuzzy blankets
* A lap
* A pillow on your lap (even if you were trying to use the pillow as sorta a table to eat food) (especially if you were trying to use the pillow as a sorta table to eat food)
* A lap and also your show is nearly over/you have to leave in five minutes/otherwise you're planning to get up shortly
* A pillow on the bed (extra points if Mom's head is there too, so she can groom it!)
* Canned cat food with lots of gravy
* Any cat food if you pet her while she's eating it
* Cat food stolen from her sister's dish (wait, that's not wooing, that's PALLAIS NO)
* A cat tree with a view of the bird feeder (someday she'll get that cardinal! Someday!)

And, as I was reminded last night:

* A new cardboard scratching pad with just the faintest smell of catnip

(She's been alternating between curling up on the scratching pad - because it's comfy? to steal it from Fluff? - and curling up on one of us ever since I brought the new scratching pad last night. I do not object to affectionate cat! I'm just amused that a $6 scratching pad is apparently the BEST THING EVER and bringing the kitty-love.)

So I don't have to use awkward links to Google Photo any more?

HERE HAVE SOME CATS. (Fluff is on the left, Pallais on the right.)

It reminds me, via 'you posted these photos a year ago today! :-D :-D :-D', that it has in fact been a year since I brought home Pallais-kitty.

(Here is a picture of her yesterday, flopped on Wife's computer because All Things On The Bed Are Hers, with the possible exception of our other cat Fluff. I regret nothing.)

We have a bird feeder, attached to the outside of our balcony doors. It's only been there a week or two, and the birds still regard it with distrust - the other night I scared a bird away from it by turning around in my chair too quickly, a few feet away.

This evening, while Wife and I were watching TV, Pallais had settled down on my lap and was purring her nearly-inaudible purr. Then she stiffened on my lap.

Wife glanced over. "Oh, look! There's a bird on the feeder."

A female cardinal had decided to take advantage, and was chilling at the bird feeder, eating her seeds. Pallais kept watching her intently, trembling, occasionally making little chirping noises of her own. This went on for five minutes or so, before finally Pallais's nerves couldn't take it and she leapt out of my lap, bounding up to the cat tower next to the bird feeder.

Naturally the bird promptly flew away. Pallais settled down on the cat tower to sulk over how she could totally have caught that bird, Mom, you don't even understand, stop laughing at me about glass doors.

Not dead!

The past couple weeks have been...not terrible? Not great, but not terrible? Mostly?

No, seriously, the bad parts have been Not That Bad, just...omnipresent. Church nonsense continues to be nonsense, without either resolving or going away. Family nonsense continues to be nonsense, albeit off In Another State. Financial worries...are not nonsense, but neither are we at immediate risk of losing our apartment and going hungry either. Cat went to vet, and has to get dosed with antibiotics twice a day, to absolutely nobody's pleasure. At least I've figured out how to get it mostly down her throat rather than in her fur, and how to bribe her into a better mood afterwards. (Hooray for food-motivated beasties.)

Now if I can re-find my writing mojo (like, at all), I'll be ecstatic. :sigh:

Biggest argument that Pallais is, in fact, large part Maine Coon: how she prefers to drink water.

She happily drinks the normal cat way! But her preferred method, if she's not really thirsty, is to dip her paw into the water and lick it off. Which is a thing that I've only seen before with Maine Coons.

(It's very cute to watch. Unfortunately, it leads to wet kitty footprints, and the fun that is walking down a dark hallway and stepping on Something Damp with bare feet and having that moment of OH GOD NO, before turning on the light and discovering that no, I didn't step in something gross, it's just Pallais tracking water around again. Whee.)

I have posted the first installment of this on AO3, here. Whee! (I have an outline, so here's hoping that I can get the remaining three chapters written in, y'know, less than a year. :wince: Not a fast writer, me.)

Also, here is photographic proof that the cats are starting to tolerate each other in close proximity, also featuring my wife's hand and my feet. I repeat: whee!

Dear adorable small cat,

I love you too. Now please stop trying to climb up and lie across my chest so I can't breathe. (More than I already can't breathe because bronchitis.) Try following your sister's example, and curl up next to me for a change! ...okay, stalking off and leaving the room is also an option.

Dear Hogwarts,

THANK YOU FOR LIKING ME I LIKE YOU TOO. (Annual review! Positive results! And yes, I did say something very similar to this to my boss.)

Dear wife,

Oh thank God you'll be home today. We can haz naptiem?
