28: Do you watch a new anime because you think it will be good, or because it's popular?
...I do not understand this question? I mean, granted, I simultaneously live under a rock and also am on Tumblr enough that I am not infrequently Introduction Vector for Wife for various things (e.g. CARMILLA). But I am not actually good about trying new things.
Really, what it comes down to is two points. First: for me, fandoms are a mostly separate thing from their canons. If a thing I like has a large fandom, yay! More fanfic and fanart for me to consume! But I have read fanfic for, say, Naruto, a canon in which I have pretty much nil interest, and likewise there's several anime that I adore for which there is pretty much no fandom.
Secondly, I have learned well over my years as a fangirl that 'good,' 'popular,' and 'thing I like' are in fact three separate circles that may or may not intersect, and it's the last one that's the most important to me. COWBOY BEBOP is my go-to example: it's excellent! It's popular! And you could not pay me to watch more of it than I already have.
(I am defining 'good' here as 'up to a certain standard regarding art, plot, and characterization, possibly also originality because lord knows I see plenty of bitching about oh that's so overdone.' This definition is why I keep those circles separate. Sometimes, you just want something gloriously predictable, y'know?)
