Apropos of nothing

So we went to Applebee's today (as you do). When it came time to pay our check, we got to chatting with our waitress, and we found out two interesting facts:

(1) If you pay via the little table machines they have there, the machine will allow you to give up to 1001%. (A past table of hers had decided to find out, and had kept hitting the little arrow until it gave out.)

(2) If your tip is high enough (e.g. 1001%), the manager will come out, just to make sure that you actually meant to tip that high.

Most of us can't afford to tip that high. Ha ha!

Lord no - although there are times when I wish I was a bajillionaire and could afford to casually leave hundred dollar tips.

Well that would definitely make someone's day! Tipping isn't super customary here so those machines aren't that common.

I haven't traveled much outside of North America - Iceland and the UK are my two exceptions so far - but I feel like the Pay At Your Table thing (with all accompanying bells and whistles, whether or not it includes tipping) is relatively new here? The first time I remember encountering it was in Montreal, maybe four years ago. I don't know if you pay at table there, or if the wait-staff vanishes with your card.

(Of course, IIRC Australia is another country that believes in paying their wait-staff an Actual Living Wage, as opposed to requiring tipping, so. :wry:)
