More anime, this time the fault of the American Otaku magazine we picked up in the grocery story on account of it having Yuri!!! On Ice on the cover. (For all the date on the magazine was April 2017, the article on Yuri clearly indicated that the author hadn't actually watched more than the first few episodes. Ah well.)

IZETTA THE LAST WITCH: Yet another alternate World War II, or maybe World War I. A transparently re-named (and mildly re-mapped) Europe is dealing, badly, with the military advances of "Germania." The beautiful princess of "Eylstadt" is running around and trying to organize alliances so her tiny country will not be overrun. Fortunately, her most important alliance turns out to be a friendship from when she was small, with a witch her own age! ...and by 'friendship' I mean 'wow, two episodes in and they are both YOU ARE MY MOST IMPORTANT PERSON, how exactly am I supposed to read this as straight again.'

I mean. I'll wait and see if Random Love Interest is introduced later on, to spoil our enjoyment. But meanwhile, I am shipping Princess/Witch like nobody's business.

IS IT WRONG TO TRY TO PICK UP GIRLS IN A DUNGEON?: the characters seem to live in a Real Actual RPG, complete to the hero having his stats written on his back, no I am not making this up. (They're not generally visible or anything, but still.) Hero starts off weak, falls in love, suddenly his learning curve is less a curve and more a straight-up line, also his sweet earnestness brings all the girls to the yard (but not the girl with whom he is in love! ...well, not in the first episode anyway), and really you've seen this show before. Maybe not this specific combination of sub-tropes, but I called it for a harem show half-way through the first episode. The wife tried to defend it, but gave up by the end. It's fun, and it's staying in the queue for now, but it's not Sword Arts Online.

(Note on SAO: we loved loved loved the first arc, were incredibly annoyed by the second, and haven't finished the third/fourth (?), in part because we loved Asuna and why, exactly, do these additional chicks keep showing up, stop that.)

I can't remember which episodes they were, but look up the Mother's Rosario (or Mother's Rosary, depends on the translation) arc in SAO. It is MAGNIFICENT.
