jennariaThis year I feel like I got two gifts. First was the story written for me, Forgotten Chapters, which is a missing episode from the original Journey To The West and includes Monkey being the sensible one, Tripitaka being kind of a bitch, and a gloriously spooky bar to their journey. The narrative echoes the feel of Yu's translation so beautifully that I really could believe this is just a few leaves that somehow got left out.
Second is the story I wrote, Being Seen, for Kamen Rider Kabuto. Kabuto is one of those fandoms where I'd seen a few episodes, enjoyed them, and kept meaning to go back and watch the rest someday. I offered it for Yuletide in the spirit of stretching my limits, and was both amused and intimidated when I actually got assigned. So I spent a couple weeks marathoning my way through 49 episodes of canon, and came out the other side absolutely giddy. The irony, of course, is that my story wound up being set pre-canon/during episode 13. Snerk. Ah, well. On the bright side, I started showing it to Stef, who has fallen in love with it as well, so I have someone to listen to me when I burble about this show and the character development and holy shit, Tendou and Kagami...
