Short version: OMG so cool.

Slightly longer version: I'm a geek from way back, but I was always on the Star Wars side of the great geek divide. This movie? Could lure me over. It reboots the universe, and does it right, without either erasing what came before (helloooo, AU!) or overloading itself with references to the first time around. The references exist, but they're like easter eggs: if you get them, great, but it's not an absolute necessity.

That's the key point: even if you're a newbie to the Trekiverse, the movie is fun. It takes nothing too seriously. Kirk is daring and reckless...and gets pounded on for it, quite a bit. Spock is beautifully logical...and doesn't always realize how to apply that logic to human emotion, so when Kirk and Spock face off, it makes sense that people would support Kirk over Spock. Chekov, Sulu, Scotty, McCoy, Uhura: all get their moment in the sun. I could wish that Uhura's moments were more concentrated on her xenolinguistic abilities, and less on her love life, but this is a reboot of Original Trek, which was never long on female characters to begin with. :-/

I want to see more. Heck, I want to track down Original Trek and watch that, since I've only seen it in bits and pieces. I can't think of higher praise than that.
