Oct. 26th, 2014 04:03 pm*Did not sign up for Yuletide. I sat down and made up a list of stories I'd want to actually request, and only one fandom was on the SO SHINY I WILL READ ANYTHING JUST PLEASE WRITE. ...well, was shiny and eligible for Yuletide, anyway. For some reason nobody nominated the old-time radio shows I've been listening to. (What do you mean, I should've nominated them then. You and your (theoretical) logic.)
*No really somebody write me Green Hornet fic. Not the movie, as I have not watched it: the radio show. Only without the really dubious bits. I acknowledge that possibly that would mean there isn't anything left. Damn you, addictive yet seriously problematic radio shows.
*I like the idea of the Green Hornet, is what it comes to? Although I think my idea of the Green Hornet is not necessarily what was actually on the radio (or any of the media since). Someone who everyone thinks is a totally bad-ass bad guy, but who's actually a bad-ass good guy, and when I try to tease out what's underpinning that, I get nothing. That idea, I like. Problem is, you've got the race issue (Kato), and the class issue (all the villains on this show ever, seriously they have no idea as to Why Do People Crime besides just being Evil), and the gender issue (God forbid Lenore Case be allowed to be the reporter she wants to be), and the issue which I shall call, for lack of a shorter term, 'can we please not have the short fat stupid sidekick thing, it was bad enough with Watson, we don't need another example plz.' Once you eliminate all of those, what do you have?
*At least the Shadow occasionally allows Margo Lane to be useful back-up? On the other hand, it has a much higher proportion of damsel in distress, and any time a villain isn't from a lower economic bracket, it turns out he's a villain because he's 'crazy.' Boo, I say, and Boo again. I still feel like it would be easier to file off the issues and maybe make something decent of the premise than it would with the Green Hornet. First thing: eliminate that whole 'learned the secret of invisibility in The Orient' bull.
*Hell, maybe go the route of The Avenger, which is basically a bad rip-off of The Shadow, only instead of 'secret of invisibility because ~Oriental mysticism~', it claims Science. Seriously I could just file off a few of the serial numbers and nobody would even know. This is partially because I feel like nobody has ever heard of The Avenger. (You aren't honestly missing much. I mean, there are free podcasts available if you're curious, but really, it is cheesetastic even in comparison to other 1940s radio shows.)
*In conclusion, here's hoping that other people write Big Eden fanfic for Yuletide (fairly good chance, given the numbers I saw when last I looked). The end.
