I only just heard about this con's existence when Arda posted about having a booth there and was like "Aw man, I wish I'd known."
Then like 12 hours later I saw someone else post about how allegedly it was a scam (except comments said unintentionally - more like a really bad misunderstanding) - so now I'm reeeeally intrigued to see what exactly happened.
It's a Tumblr-specific con (which is why it's called DashCon), so I'm guessing you wouldn't have been interested anyway if you'd looked into it further.
Yeah, I found out later and pretty much laughed my head off at the "irony" of a Tumblr-based con being poorly organized, a disaster, and causing drama. XD
Hahahah. Yeah, would've been fun to meet up. And to be honest, having read up more on the whole ordeal by now, it sounds like the entire thing would have been generally tolerable for those who are:
1 - adults with status/privileges including the ability to get away, rather than being a teenager who was dropped off or took public transport or just doesn't know how to get out of the situation 2 - friends with other adults with whom you can just say "uh yeaaah, screw this" and go find somewhere drama-free to spend the weekend 3 - not a pro guest expecting appropriate treatment/payment/compensation from the con
Still a horrendous money-suck, but at least a casual, adult attendee would have had the option of bailing before getting screwed over on more than the badge prices. I feel REALLY bad for the kids who got there, were pressured into giving up more money, and then had no way to leave when they realized what they'd done and started freaking out... and the guests who wound up sleeping on couches and stuff.
And for the record, I'm equidistant from Chicago and Detroit (there is literally a sign about a mile from my house along a hiking trail which keeps getting stolen), and now have a car with INCREDIBLE mpg, so like I often tell people, meetups are always a possibility if one is going to be in either of those areas. ;)
