An interesting contrast

jennaria Friday, Tanya and I watched TOY SOLDIERS. She'd never seen it, and me...well, it's been several years since it was the fandom of my heart. It was like seeing it again for the first time. Thing is, the first time I saw it? All I saw was a cheerfully cheesy early 90s action film. Without all the emotional extras I attached to it later, it's reverted to just being a fun little film. It's kind of nice.
Today, we went to see PACIFIC RIM. I haven't seen many kaiju films, but I've seen enough mecha anime to have several 'eee' moments over the jaegers. Also, kick-ass heroine! Nobody being stupid! Minimal usage of stupid tropes! Are my standards low? Probably - but the point still remains: when an action movie's plot <i>doesn't</i> primarily depend on one or more of the main characters being Stupid, then it's worth praising. ;wry:
Back to writing. From here until the wedding, our time is either booked or filling fast. Augh.
