DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES (2023) - PG-13
Official description: A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers embark on an epic quest to retrieve a long lost relic, but their charming adventure goes dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people.

Character death: The wife of Edgin (Chris Pine) dies as part of backstory in the beginning of the movie. Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) dies at the end of the final confrontation (but is promptly resurrected). Lots of interchangeable mooks.

Sex: None!

Violence: A lot, although very little blood. I think half the run-time is various fights.

Sexual violence: One threat (to Holga), right near the beginning of the movie. She does not take it seriously and promptly kicks the character's butt. He's never seen again.

Second-hand embarrassment: Little to none!

Parent issues: So many. Edgin's daughter, Kira, believes he's abandoned her for most of the movie, due to the manipulations of Forge (Hugh Grant), who's stepped into the parental role; when Edgin and Forge have their final confrontation, Forge holds Kira hostage for a few minutes with a knife at her throat. As mentioned above, Holga (Kira's adopted mom) dies in front of her as part of the final confrontation, although she's resurrected.

Actual Review: Wow, that officially summery does not convey lots of important information. So! This movie is about Edgin (Chris Pine) and his best friend Holga (Michelle Rodriguez), part of a band of thieves - except these two got caught and thrown in prison. This is extra not great because the reason Edgin got into thievery was to support his young daughter Kira (Chloe Coleman), so when Edgin realizes he's gonna get caught, he requests that Forge (Hugh Grant) take care of her. Jump to: two years later, Edgin and Holga are getting out of prison (...one way or another), and going to pick up Kira! Except it's Not That Simple, because it would be a very short movie otherwise.

I'm going to admit that my standard for RPG movies is The Gamers: Dorkness Rising. I mention this because there's only two points of similarity between that movie and this one: first of all, they're about D&D. Secondly, they make me remember what fun playing D&D can be.

HONOR AMONG THIEVES does not have a frame story including the Actual Play, alas - although there's definitely several 'and that was a natural 1' or 'and that was a natural 20' moments. It does have characters that give me the vibe that both writers and actors were having fun. Hell, the worst I can say about it is that halfway through, I was starting to tire of the endless progression of action scenes - and then enter Rege-Jean Page, as Xenk, a paladin so anime I swear I saw actual sparkles around him. He is here to be that character played by an old friend of the DM''s who's in town for the week, and he provides some much-needed contrast to our party of rogues.

Overall, I enjoyed it, and I'm tempted to look for a D&D group, but I have no desire to be fannish about it.
