It's one thing to read fanfic for a canon where I have no experience - I've quite happily read Teen Wolf fanfic, or Stargate Atlantis, neither of which I've watched. It's the 'fanfic as, basically, original fic' experience. Happens to all of us. (...I assume.)

It's another thing to read fanfic for a canon where I tried the canon, got halfway through the first episode, realized that I actively loathed a major character and wanted him to die in a fire, and never went back. But I'm still enjoying the fanfic!

I may go back and try canon again, just with my finger on the ff button. Wouldn't be the first time that I've watched the Self-Edited Version of a show.

(For those curious: the canon in question is Boku no Hero Academia, and the character I loathed was Bakugou Katsuki.)

I think sometimes fic authors can totally change one's view of a character - I've had similar experiences, where a character I disliked (or sometimes just cared nothing about) suddenly became interesting & gripping and I became quite invested in them. didn't usually revisit the canon, so I'm not sure if my views on characterization there would normally change, though it did in a couple of cases

ok, wow - yeah, developing a soft spot for that sort of character does seem like that would be a puzzlement

Had to point that at my son. He's heavily into that fandom, and said he doesn't even start improving til season 3
