I remember, back in the day (before GoF came out), I was on the hpslash mailing list, and people pretty much only wrote three pairings - Harry/Ron, Harry/Draco, and Remus/Sirius. When someone started writing Seamus/Dean, it was new and shocking.
...and then I drifted out of the fandom. I've glanced at the fanfic every so often since then, but as you said, it's hard to find good fic. 'Sort by kudos' only gets you so far, when there's literally 5000 pages of fic to look through. This is the first time I've made an active attempt.
