Sampler Saturday, part 2
May. 5th, 2018 04:14 pmFive more shows, and it's split neatly in half. (How can it be split in half when I have an odd number? Shhh, stop logic-ing.)
THE ROYAL TUTOR: King of Random Imaginary European Country hires a tutor for his four younger sons, none of whom want a tutor of any kind. This is super pretty in a super shoujo sort of way, and honestly most of why I like it is because it has the same sort of fluffy vibe as some reverse harem shows I like, but it's not a chick winning over guys by Not Being An Idiot, it's an adult man who is damn well the Adult In The Room, in comparison to the very pretty but very teenage princes.
RECOVERY OF AN MMO JUNKIE: So the subtitle of this is actually 'Recommendation of the Wonderful Virtual Life,' and I have to say that the first episode is way more leaning toward the subtitle than the main title. The majority of the first episode is all about how awesome the MMO (and the heroine's character's friends in-game) are. Eh. It made me laugh a couple times, it's pretty, and it's fluff, which is what I'm interested in right now. It stays.
91 DAYS: 1920s! Murder! Mafia! Look, my only real point of comparison is BACCANO!, which is tonally opposite and also does a lot more things with intertwining storylines, as opposed to this show which just wants to be THE GODFATHER so bad, you guys, so bad. It's not a bad show, as near as I can tell based on one episode, it's just not something I'm up for right now.
INTERVIEWS WITH MONSTER GIRLS: This one I only got half an episode and I just couldn't. Male adult teacher has a fascination with Minority! School gets a new Minority teacher, and he makes her super uncomfortable by making it clear that he wants to talk to her about being Minority! Also he finds out that three (female) students are Minority, and promptly wants to talk to them - in private - about being Minority! The fact that the Minority in question are what the show calls 'demi-humans' doesn't make the allegory any more thickly veiled, given that we're explicitly told that the demis were persecuted in the past and are now protected by law and government agency. Also, no really, no matter how much the show protests, the main character really does come across as creepy and unwilling to admit it.
ELEGANT YOUKAI APARTMENT LIFE: On the one hand, the plotline (Ordinary Guy finds himself in supernatural surroundings!) has been done, and I found myself comparing the show (unfavorably) to INU X BOKU, in the sense that both involve an apartment complex of (mostly) youkai. On the other hand, it's so pretty, and the first scene gave me (possibly false) hopes of a romance with Main Character's Best Male Friend, and maybe the main character gets less irritating as the show develops...? Inasmuch as I suspect two of these three things ain't gonna, happen, I should just remove it from my queue, but I'm hesitating for now.
I promised myself to get through at least ten anime, so success on that at least. My queue remains ridiculously long, but it's slightly less ridiculous. Slightly.
