First season of Avatar: watched
Feb. 13th, 2010 11:40 pmOMG so cool.
First, let's get the quibbles out of the way: the writers can't always decide whether Sokka's the sidekick (and thus capable) or just the comic relief (and thus not capable). Aang has an excuse, but please to let him put down the Idiot Ball. And they have the unfortunate tendency to occasionally fall into the children's TV trap of Moral Television, wherein a character learns an Important Lesson, even if said character and/or his friends have to be wrenched out of character to set up said Important Lesson.
With that said: holy shit, this is fun.
The characters are allowed to learn and grow. Plot points -- and characters -- that turn up in what you think is a one-off episode, turn up again later. Aang behaves like a kid who is slowly maturing. Sokka and Katara behave like siblings, real siblings (...well, the Disney equivalant, but whatever). I adore Iroh -- I mean, really, how can you not like a man who understands the importance of tea? And I have a sneaking fondness for Zuko, mostly because he's already proven himself redeemable, and not in a cheap way either.
I'm told the fandom is large and kind of scary. At the moment, I don't care. I have two more seasons to watch, and I'm so looking forward to it.
