Olympics, first weekend

On the one hand, I am HERE FOR FIGURE SKATING. Yes, even the team event. On the other hand, Wife gently dragged me away from the TV set to continue working on our Classic Batcave Lego set, because Japan decided that eh, having gotten into the final set was good enough, and sent out Mr. 'no really, he did great in Juniors,' and I may perhaps have been screaming at the TV. (I admit nothing.)

On the third hand, I...kind of have a history of getting over-invested in the Olympics? It was the only sports event we regularly watched when I was a kid. I mean, I acknowledge NBC is totally manipulating me to keep me tuning it, but still. They're like SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATING and I'm like, "Don't care," and they're like, "But here is Maame Biney who is joy in human form at being in the Olympics and also really good at short track speed skating," and I'm like, "GO MAAME GO MAAME HOLD OFF THAT - YES YOU MADE IT INTO THE FINALS, YOU AMAZING PERSON YOU." ...and then I go back to not caring about short track speed skating.

YES we are totally caught up in Olympic fever here too! (Although for obvious reasons our coverage tends to heavily favour our Canadian team). So proud of our team figure skating gold! :DDD The Shibutanis had such an amazing Ice Dance performance too!

I am extremely sure that your figure skating commentators cannot be as annoying as ours. Like, I liked Johnny Weir as a skater, but dear lord someone take his microphone away pls, you sound more like you're hosting a catty home viewing than a professional commentator.

(That said, you guys have the best Ice Dance people, it is you.)

Maame's joy is just so infectious, though, how can anyone resist that?! (Yeah, we've been sucked into it here, too, though I'm about read to shove socks into the figure skating commenters' mouths)

I know! It's like, if I were there about to go walk in the Parade of Nations, I'd be giggling in sheer overwhelmed joy too, SOLIDARITY.

As mentioned above - oh yeah. I'm not quite to the point of hitting 'mute,' because I want to hear the music, I just don't want to hear the commentators being catty when really NATHAN CHEN IS ALL OF 18 YEARS OLD, GIVE HIM A BREAK.

I hadn't really noticed it until another friend (who's been watching Chinese and Korean broadcasts of the games) mentioned it, but the NBC commentary really is almost continuous to the point of just wanting to throw something at them to SHUT UP for two seconds. ESPECIALLY during the figure skating because I'd like to listen to the music and appreciate it without your catty comments, thanks.

I know! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Olympics, but please, for Godzilla's sake, SHUT UP! I'm happy to have you blither while they take their bows and sit in the kiss n' cry, but not while they're performing.

I absolutely adore the Olympics. Everything. Even skiing or bobsledding, which is like whatever most of the time.

And Maame is utterly enchanting with how excited she is.
