[Fandom] Just Visiting

jennariaSo Wife and I have plans to go to Universal Orlando Studios Harry Potter World in a few months. In the meantime, we are working our way through all the books and all the movies and also the Lego video game because it's us and that's about our gaming level.
Also also, I am poking at the Enormous Piles of Fanfic. As you do.
I was briefly in Harry Potter fandom, waaay back in the day before Goblet of Fire even. Since then, it's been on the list of Things I Quite Like But Am Not Particularly Emotionally Invested In. The result is that I'm willing to read almost anything.
Overall Conclusions, so far:
I'm pleasantly surprised by the number of Harry-as-Auror case-fic stories pairing Harry with Draco. I'm always pro 'Murder Mystery In Your Fandom,' really. Why almost always Draco, though? Then again, I sorted by kudos, which does tend to put the fandom juggernaut ships toward the top.
I'm unsurprised by the number of stories that make Dumbledore out to be the True Big Bad. I'm mildly depressed that most of said stories turn Ron and Hermione into paper cut-out equivalents of themselves who are equally demonized. If we're excusing Tom Fucking Riddle all his evils, could we maybe cut the 11-year-olds a break?
I stumbled across a whole bunch of short, romance-novel-type fics! ...all Harry/Snape, which is not necessarily a romance novel pairing, I'd have thought. I blame Alan Rickman and his fondness for period drama. In defense of the stories in question: I wouldn't swear to their characterization, but as romances starring Person Who Looks Like Alan Rickman As Snape and Person Who Looks Like Adult Dan Radcliffe, they were good.
(The truth is, my Harry Potter OTP is Half The Cast/Lots of Therapy, and my favorite AUs are the ones wherein an adult - almost any adult - is willing to adult on Harry's behalf.)
Generally, it's been an interesting exercise in What Is Actually Important To Me About Canon (which only sorta overlaps with What Would Make Me Stop Reading A Fanfic). Also in tormenting my wife. Look, sometimes you encounter a story so terrible that you have to tell someone immediately! It's not my fault!
